The ski areas

Four areas, not linked by piste: valley buses and the train connect them.

Brévent – Flégère

South-facing, with the Mont-Blanc massif in front of you all day. Freestyle zone at 2000 with rails and a big airbag (ESF-supervised). Beginners: Le Savoy area at the foot of town (2 drag lifts + a moving carpet).

Access
Brévent: gondola from Chamonix centre (Planpraz). Flégère: cable car from Les Praz, 3 km away. The two sectors are linked.

Grands Montets (Argentière)

The valley's high, technical area and a freeride reference. Partial opening from 28 November, depending on snow. Summit access by lift has been suspended since the 2018 fire.

Via the Plan Joran gondola. A new 10-seat gondola Argentière → Lognan is scheduled for the 2026 Christmas holidays; a 3S cable car to the summit (3,000 m+) for 2027-28.

Balme – Vallorcine (Le Tour) To be confirmed

The gentle one: wide, open slopes on the Le Tour side and runs through fir forest on the Vallorcine side. Good for mixed-level groups.

Les Houches – Saint-Gervais To be confirmed

Tree-lined runs for every level, home of the Kandahar World Cup downhill (the 'Verte des Houches'). The pass also covers Saint-Gervais and the Mont-Blanc Tramway. Adult day pass listed at €60 (first period).

Off-piste & ski touring

Vallée Blanche

The legendary glacier descent from the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m): about 23 km and 2,000 m of vertical. It is high-mountain terrain with crevasses — go with a mountain guide. The tourist office lists it from late January to early May, depending on snow and weather.

Marked uphill itineraries exist on the Les Houches, Grands Montets and Balme ski areas — a safe way to start before heading into the backcountry with a guide.

Cross-country skiing

Chamonix (Bois du Bouchet)

Three trails a short walk from the centre: Bois (red, 11.7 km), Bois du Bouchet (green, 3 km), Orthaz (blue, 6.3 km). 09:00–17:00; adult day ticket listed at €10. 2026-27 dates not yet confirmed.

Argentière (Les Chosalets)

About 15 km of classic and skating trails: La Moraine (red, 8.5 km), Les Chosalets (blue, 3 km), Les Îles (green, 1.3 km). Season listed 1 Dec 2026 – 3 Apr 2027; passes sold at Les Chosalets.

Ligue Magnus (France's top league) at the Richard Bozon rink, 20:00. Next home games: 27 Oct v Angers, 10 Nov v Grenoble, 20 Nov v Bordeaux, 27 Nov v Briançon, 1 Dec v Anglet.

Trail running — Marathon du Mont-Blanc & UTMB

Marathon du Mont-Blanc: 24–27 June 2027; registration expected to open late October – early November 2026. UTMB: the 2026 edition ran 24–30 August; 2027 dates are not official yet (press reports a possible shift because of the cycling World Championships in Haute-Savoie, 24 Aug – 5 Sep 2027).

Swimming pool, a 180 m² bouldering wall (climbing shoes only, no ropes), fitness room (16+) and the ice rink, all in central Chamonix. Winter 2026-27 opening hours had not been published when we checked — check before you go.
