Between seasons: what the valley offers before the lifts turn
Late October in Chamonix is quiet — but not empty. Photography, makers, a wine fair and two free concerts.

The intersaison — the gap between summer and winter — is when Chamonix belongs to the people who live here. Many lifts are closed, some restaurants take holidays, and the seasonal crowd hasn't arrived yet. It's also a good time to see the valley's cultural side.

When does winter start?
The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc hadn't published official 2026-27 opening dates when we checked. A schedule on chamonix.com mentions a partial Grands Montets opening from 21 November, depending on snow — treat that as provisional until the operator confirms.
