Vinyl at altitude: the listening-bar model arrives on rue des Moulins
Le Pèle pairs a Palladium sound system with thousands of records — a different idea of a night out in a ski town.

Après-ski in Chamonix has long meant volume: ski boots, big choruses, a packed bar by 5 pm. Le Pèle, at 78 rue des Moulins, works from a different brief.
The venue describes itself as an audiophile bar, restaurant and club. Early evening it's a listening bar with sharing plates; as the night goes on the lights drop, the kitchen turns into a bar, and a DJ takes the music towards disco, funk and house.
The sound
The system is by Palladium Audio, and the record collection is curated by the venue's artistic director and resident DJ, Kosme. The official site puts the collection at around 4,000 records (the tourist office listing says about 3,000 — collections grow).
Listening bars — rooms built around a high-fidelity system and records played with care, a format with roots in Japan's jazz kissa — have become familiar in many big cities. Finding one in an Alpine resort says something about how the valley's nightlife is changing.
